A list of best lakes is the perfect way to get a fisherman shaking his head and asking, “What was he thinking?” Ask a dozen fishermen for their list of top lakes and each list will be different. The following list is a combination of history, the personal preferences of interviewed experts and current lake trends. The list provides a good reference for lakes to consider when looking for a crappie fishing adventure in 2025.
Grenada Lake, MS, takes the number one spot every year for good reason. It’s “The Home of the Three-Pound Crappie,” and it lives up to its name. It’s on a down trend but still better than other lakes. Barnett Reservoir moved into the number two spot because it has been producing good numbers of quality fish. The Texas lakes, Fork and Pines, are fantastic destinations for crappie action. Pickwick is inconsistent but still a good lake and picked high be some anglers.
Must-fish lakes include Green River, KY, where three-plus pounders were caught last year and numbers of fish are excellent. A cold weather spot is the St. John’s River, FL because it has overall outdoor beauty and its big, gold-tinted black crappie are the prettiest you’ll ever catch. Another lake performing great in early 2025 is Lake Talquin, FL.
